/blogs/blog/publish 2025-01-07T00:00:00+00:00 2026-03-03T14:20:47+00:00 Why I鈥檓 vegan: Aleksandra Wielgopolanin Kate Gray Our Technical and Quality Manager, Aleksandra Wielgopolanin loves a challenge. From reading a book a week for a year to training for an ultra-marathon, Aleks always has a goal to work towards. But underpinning all her efforts is her choice to follow a vegan diet.

Aleks鈥 veganism may have started as a post-COVID experiment she set herself as part of her 鈥榶ear of challenges鈥 in 2021. But it has become an important and enjoyable lifestyle choice that she sees as a fundamental part of her identity.

Embracing the challenge

鈥淚 love to challenge myself.鈥 Aleks says.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not about judging my success, but having a goal helps to motivate me to make positive changes. I enjoy the journey and that was particularly true when it came to learning how to follow a healthy, vegan diet.

鈥淏ack in 2021, many of my friends were vegetarian or vegan and I wanted to see if I could follow a vegan diet myself. I had several motivations to cut out animal products from my diet; I was concerned about the dairy industry and wider animal welfare issues surrounding the production of meat and dairy, in addition, for me veganism is an important environmental choice. Once I made the switch to veganism I never lapsed, but I did learn some important lessons that made it much easier and more enjoyable!鈥

Try Aleks' favourite kombuchas for yourself

Original kombucha

From 拢24.65 for 12 bottles.

Our Original will always be my Number 1. 听I'm fan of its pure flavour. Sometimes I brew my own kombucha, mixing different types of teas, and I think the love for the classic fermented flavour grew from that.

Sicilian orange & Yuzu Kombucha

From 拢24.65 for 12 bottle

Orange & Yuzu is my favourite of our fruity kombuchas. It reminds me of Fanta, which is a taste of my childhood. Now I have a healthy version which is even better!

Ginger kombucha

From 拢24.65 for 12 bottles

Ginger is great when I need a pick-me-up, either in the morning to start the day better, or when I need a little bit of a vitamin kick because I'm not feeling great - it's the best option.

Find the life in your food

Aleks says that she found the transition to veganism gave her the chance to see food in a completely new way. It was exciting to experiment with food and find new ways to make familiar ingredients the star of her meals.

She says: 鈥淚 tried a few meat substitutes but quickly realised that they weren鈥檛 for me. I didn鈥檛 use recipes, I just focused on the ingredients I loved and experimented with how to prepare the dishes I enjoy using just vegan-friendly ingredients.

鈥淭here鈥檚 lots of life in my food. My cooking skills have improved, and I love to cook for friends and surprise them with the flavour and excitement you can have in vegan dishes.鈥

Do your homework

If you鈥檙e considering adopting a vegan diet for Veganuary, or as a long-term choice, Aleks has some tips:

  • It鈥檚 important to do your homework. I would recommend researching the iron content of different foods to ensure you鈥檙e getting enough. Anaemia is a common problem, particularly for women, and it鈥檚 simple to top up your iron with a supplement. Make sure you pair it with Vitamin C to aid absorption.
  • I take vitamin B12 supplements as this can be difficult to find in a plant-based diet. There鈥檚 plenty of useful information on the and the is a rich source of tips, recipes and information.
  • There鈥檚 no need to start all at once 鈥 why not start with one or two vegan days a week and build up?
  • Herbs and spices are your friends 鈥 even the most humble vegetable can be made into something delicious and satisfying with a little care and creativity.

And one final piece of advice from Aleks鈥ave fun with your food.

Aleks says: 鈥淚 think my challenge has been easier to stick to because I didn鈥檛 get too hung up on making perfect meals. Sometimes my creativity led to brilliant discoveries, other times I made things I will never repeat!鈥

/blogs/blog/kombucha-skincare-benefits 2024-09-19T00:00:00+01:00 2026-03-03T14:20:05+00:00 Kombucha Skincare Benefits Amelia Henderson Kombucha, 鈥榯he elixir of life鈥 is increasingly becoming a staple in many people鈥檚 diets due to its restorative antioxidant, immune boosting properties. But what about its beauty benefits? Journalists and beauty bloggers can鈥檛 get enough of the stuff, with skin gurus like the legendary Trinny Woodall naming our very own booch as her ! So, what are the skin benefits of Kombucha?

Let's talk all things Kombucha, digestion, skincare and acne...

  • Kombucha and acne
  • Kombucha skincare
  • Leaky gut, leaky skin: what鈥檚 the connection?
  • Is Kombucha face wash really a thing?
  • Do SCOBY masks really work?

Kombucha and acne听

In recent years, the relationship between our gut and other parts of the body have been widely explored, between good gut health and a healthy heart, a robust immune system and maintaining a good metabolism. , Kombucha can also help to reduce skin inflammation, which is great news for eczema and acne sufferers. So, maybe there is a link between gut health and acne after all. Kombucha contains organic acids and natural probiotics, which 鈥鈥, and maintain the natural balance of the skin, so less breakouts!

Kombucha skincare听

You can reap the skin benefits of Kombucha by drinking it, but you can also use it on your skin! , expert skin care therapist Inna Knyazenvch explains that: 鈥淔ermented ingredients containing probiotics can help to improve inflammatory skin conditions and reduce premature signs of ageing鈥 and that adding probiotics to our skincare听 鈥渨ill help to [create] a healthier skin microbiome and boost its immunity to fight environmental toxins and bacteria.鈥 鈥 what鈥檚 not to love?! Over the years, many skincare brands have released their own fermented skincare products but they can be on the expensive side. We鈥檝e created a recipe for a , which is quick and easy to make at home. It contains silky shea butter, coconut oil, essential oils and our hero ingredient 鈥 ! Along with our antioxidant and vitamin-rich Kombucha, our recipe also contains frankincense essential oil, which has fantastic antiseptic properties. All of our Kombuchas are fully organic, vegan and gluten free. Check out our for tips on how to make it.

Leaky gut, leaky skin: what's the connection?

The term refers to when your gut lining becomes compromised and allows undigested food particles and toxins to enter the bloodstream, causing an immune response and possibly leading to health conditions, including uncomfortable skin conditions. There are a variety of causes for a leaky gut, including high stress levels and eating food that does not agree with you.听 Similarly, refers to when your skin is not acting like the barrier between your insides and the outside world, as it should. This can lead to toxins and environmental allergens entering your bloodstream and causing internal issues.听 According to 鈥渋ncreased intestinal permeability is causing or contributing to certain maladies, including potentially ataopic dermatitis鈥. Simply put, it鈥檚 your leaky gut behind your common inflammatory skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema and rosacea.. So, before healing your skin, you need to heal your gut and address any digestive problems you are having.听 If you鈥檙e looking for some ways to improve your digestive health, read our blog on the . Or, if you鈥檙e looking to get started improving your digestive health right away, why not get involved in our ?听

Is Kombucha face wash really a thing?

All skin is different. Whether that鈥檚 natural or chemical, many of us have tried a number of different face washes and are still yet to find something that works for our skin. If you鈥檙e still experimenting, why not give a Kombucha face wash a go? This home remedy is as simple as it sounds, and involves using a bottle of Kombucha to wash your face. Remember to only try this with raw, unflavoured Kombucha as other varieties could contain harmful sugars and additives which could cause a reaction in your skin.听 As with any changes to your skincare routine, you may experience a little bit of irritation to begin with, however if this persists, stop using this method immediately. And it goes without saying, keep it away from your eyes!

Do SCOBY masks really work?

is the jelly-looking, living culture of bacteria and yeast used to make Kombucha. And, although SCOBY may not sound and look the most appealing, a SCOBY mask could be just what you need for softer, more supple skin. How do you make a SCOBY mask you may ask. Well, you鈥檒l need to source some SCOBY (either homemade or shop-bought) and blend it up into a paste. It鈥檚 completely normal if it has a bit of a chunky texture! Next, apply it to your skin听 like you would any other face mask, let it work for around 10 minutes while you watch TV or soak in the bath, and then wash it off. You can get creative with this mask and add in other nourishing ingredients, like Aloe Vera or essential oils for additional benefits. Alternatively, you can use a thin disc of SCOBY as a sheet mask with cut-out eyes, nose and mouth. Using a whole Kombucha should bring circulation to your skin鈥檚 surface and regenerate skin cells, and the will act as a dead skin peel. Try it for yourself and let us know what you think!听 Glow on the inside and out with 黑料大事记 Kombucha! ]]>

We鈥檙e proud to supply kombucha to Team GB Olympic Rowers and and it鈥檚 great to know that the Gold and Silver medal-winning duo relied on our booch right the way through training. Here at 黑料大事记 Organic we鈥檝e always believed in the power of kombucha to help you feel your best. For most of us our diet is something we think about with general health and wellbeing in mind, but for elite athletes it鈥檚 a crucial part of their training and preparation Before they headed to Paris we spoke to Hannah听and Ollie听to find out about their training and why they include our organic kombucha in their daily diet. EK 鈥 What does a typical day鈥檚 diet look like for you during training? OWG 鈥 We consume between 5,000 and 6,000 calories per day when we鈥檙e training, which means we have 5 meals per day. It鈥檚 a real challenge to get enough fuel to support our training regime of three two-hour sessions each day. We have a team nutritionist who works closely with the chef who prepares breakfast and lunch for us 鈥 we also have a first breakfast at home before training and an evening meal and snacks that we prepare for ourselves. EK 鈥 How do live cultures feature in your nutrition? HS 鈥 Our nutritionist is a strong advocate of including probiotics and live cultures in our diet and she helps us to balance the need to consume so many calories with the nutritional make up and diversity of our food and drink. The importance of probiotics and live cultures has become a real focus for our sport in the past two or three years because we know that the cumulative effect of all the small positive things we do makes a big difference to our results. EK 鈥 What benefit do you experience from drinking kombucha and including other gut-friendly foods in your diet? HS 鈥 For me the benefits of drinking kombucha are really tangible. When I first started training at this level, I struggled to take on enough calories 鈥 it was just physically uncomfortable and took a toll on my digestion. Drinking kombucha and eating plenty of fibre have really helped me to have an efficient and healthy digestive system. OWG 鈥 We can鈥檛 afford to have time out from training. It鈥檚 so easy to pick up bugs when travelling and competing in close proximity with rowers from all over the world so it鈥檚 crucial to support our immune systems with live cultures and pro-biotics. I have used pro-biotic supplements in the past, but I much prefer the reassurance of getting them from a natural organic product. HS 鈥 For both of us, our regular kombucha feels like a treat rather than a chore. It鈥檚 a great alternative to a fizzy sugary drink and we look forward to enjoying our kombucha. EK 鈥 Do you think a happy gut gives you psychological benefits? HS 鈥 I really notice the difference in my mood and resilience when my gut health is good. The gut-brain axis means that supporting your gut health is a wise move if you want to be able to cope well with stress and maintain focus. OWG 鈥 Our training is all about the cumulative result of many marginal gains. It just makes sense that anything we can do to help stay fit, focussed and strong is a good idea 鈥 especially when it鈥檚 something we enjoy! Of course, a daily kombucha boost isn鈥檛 just for rowing superstars, we can all benefit from improved digestion, better mood and strengthened immunity 鈥 even if the only medal we鈥檙e likely to win this summer is for the egg and spoon race at the school sports day. I believed that was normal and healthy and couldn鈥檛 understand why people took such extreme actions like not having cow鈥檚 milk on their cereal or boiled eggs for breakfast. But for 7 years now I have been fully vegan, and my diet has been entirely plant-based. So, what was it that changed my mind and was it the right decision? It began when I was at school and asked my parents if I could become a vegetarian. I鈥檇 grown up around farms and countryside and seeing the animal agriculture first hand had connected the animals I saw outside my window with the food on my plate. Once I had connected the two and seen what was involved in producing the food I ate, I decided that I would rather have lentils in my pasta sauce than minced beef. The idea that it was not worth killing an animal just for me to eat meat was fundamental to me for several years, but I never saw any issue with milking a cow or taking the eggs that a chicken had laid. It wasn鈥檛 until I went to university that I was exposed to many varying views of the world. This made me want to understand my diet and consumption from all aspects which included researching animal agriculture and the alternatives. The conclusion for me was to eliminate the consumption of all animal products from my life but it is important to recognise that is far from perfect. While I believe there are clear problems with the industries surrounding animal agriculture; plenty of alternative crops / meat-free foods can cause harm to humans as well as the environment when produced in the wrong way. My goal by transitioning to a vegan diet was to do as little harm as possible. 听 My reasons why being Vegan is important For me, animals were the principal reason for becoming vegan. A lot of their exploitation goes unnoticed which is understandable when taking note may also mean removing peoples鈥 favourite part of their diet. Naturally the worst conditions are in factory farms employed by large corporations who can hide the horrible environments the animals endure. There are now plenty of articles and documentaries for those who are interested in knowing where their meat, dairy and eggs come from. Environmental issues have also become far more apparent through the media in recent years which has meant people are increasingly considering this in the lifestyle choices they make. For me, a vegan diet is a great way to reduce the impact I have on the drain of resources and damage to natural ecosystems. The air and water pollution from intensive factory farms, as well as their high-water use, makes alternative plant crops far more sustainable. Deforestation is also a massive issue: firstly, the land needed to raise the animals and then the vast number of crops that need to be grown to feed them. If the crops were simply fed to humans in the first place, far less land would be needed and hence more land would be protected for vital habitats like the Amazon rainforest. Health is another major consideration in our diets and there are many benefits with a plant-based one. The amount of chemicals involved in producing animal products is alarming. From antibiotics for preventing disease in their horrendous living conditions, to supplements for maximising their yield, all these chemicals result in toxins being left in the food that people eat. Plant crops tend to require and contain less toxins, but this is where organic produce becomes important. Organic fruit, veg and other plant-based products are fantastic for a cleaner, vegan lifestyle. For me, working at 黑料大事记 has been great as the company shares the same values around organic and vegan produce. I know that everything I contribute at work goes towards producing a great tasting drink that does as little harm as possible to people and the planet. The nutrition in animal-based foods also tends to be much higher in fat than the plant alternatives which can be an issue if consumed in excess. Ultimately the health effects I have experienced since become vegan are anecdotal but very real for me. I have experienced better moods, improved concentration, better gut health and an overall feeling of increased fitness. This may obviously vary for everyone but for me it has been fantastic. In recent years, finding products that are suitable for vegans has become much easier with increased options and clear labelling for most things. Eating out has also become far more straightforward as most places have clearly marked options. Beyond this, finding brands and products that meet higher standards of environmental and ethical responsibility can be very difficult. Every brand wants to be seen as though they are doing the right thing which can make it very confusing when deciding where to spend your money. Often the smaller natural / whole foods shops vet the products they sell so that customers don鈥檛 have to worry so much about researching each individual company. On a larger scale there are independent organisations like B Corp who certify companies based on various ethical and environmental standards. This means that if a company is a certified B Corp you know they meet high standards of social and environmental performance, and you can support them with a clearer conscience. 听 Top tips for plant-based lifestyles So, this Veganuary if you are feeling like trying a plant-based diet out 鈥 here are some tips I have learned over the years!
  • Take it slow - Once I decided to go vegan, it was a slow transition. Try replacing foods and ingredients gradually to find out what works well for your body and lifestyle.
  • Reduce instead of remove - If you don鈥檛 want to go the whole way, maybe just try reducing your meat consumption for a month or two and see how you feel
  • Vote with your money - Spend some time looking at plant-based brands that you are attracted to and include these products in your diet 鈥 by voting with your money, you are automatically having a positive impact on the planet
听 Of course, so I can always recommend trying some of our delicious living kombucha as a part of your Veganuary adventures. But I would say that! 听 Written by Ben Costello Planning and Production Manager @ 黑料大事记 Kombucha]]>

/blogs/blog/why-we-arent-doing-black-friday 2021-11-24T00:00:00+00:00 2026-03-03T14:20:22+00:00 Why we aren鈥檛 doing Black Friday Genevieve Boast Black Friday has become an annual habit for many people in the UK and US over the last few decades. It is traditionally linked to the American celebration of Thanksgiving and the official start of holiday sales. The term has become associated with retailers encouraging massive consumer spending at the end of November 鈥 something that many hope will put them 鈥榠n the black鈥 in terms of profit. But as a B Corp, this kind of message doesn鈥檛 really fit with our ethos. We proudly produce premium craft kombucha, brewed in the authentic way to ensure that it contains healthy, living bacteria and antioxidants that nurture human health. This, plus the fact that we source high quality, organic ingredients from ethical suppliers, means that we place a high value on both our products and the people and processes that go into making them special. To push our intelligent customers and fans to buy our Kombucha at rock bottom prices once a year just to capitalise on sales, seems a little disingenuous to us. However, at the end of the day, we are also still a consumer brand and wouldn鈥檛 be sustainable commercially or ethically if we didn鈥檛 encourage people to try, buy and support us by repeat purchasing our delicious booch. So how do we square this circle back to our own purchasing behaviours? These are some of the values that we share as the 黑料大事记 Family that also align to how we produce and communicate as a business.

Real is better

In a global economy where 鈥榢nock off鈥 replicas have become the norm, we believe that researching 鈥榬eal鈥, authentic products that are craft made by small or local suppliers adds value to a purchase. When we buy goods like this, not only are we voting with our purchasing choices and where we choose to invest our money, but we are often supporting smaller producers and suppliers who work hard to create unique and special items that we cherish more than mass produced goods. At 黑料大事记, this is one of the reasons that we brew our organic drinks the traditional way, to ensure we sell 鈥榬eal鈥 kombucha that comes with real and tangible, health benefits. We believe that real products are better than cheaper imitations!

Less is more

In times when resources are short, we believe that buying the things that truly matter, less often, generates a higher return of joy and health. When we take the time to consider what we really want and need, (or what our bodies really need), we purchase the things that enhance our lifestyle and create a healthy ecosystem inside and out. At 黑料大事记 we have found that once we start to really listen to our body, mind and soul, the things we choose to buy reduce in volume and increase our sense of gratitude and wellbeing.

What鈥檚 the Difference Between Kombucha and Kefir?

Beginning life with a sugar-containing liquid and a SCOBY culture, Kombucha and Kefir are fermented drinks that can be enjoyed as part of a healthy diet. And while they both work wonders for gut health, there are several differences between the two. Firstly, they taste completely different because Kefir is traditionally made with milk, while kombucha is usually brewed from green tea 鈥 this often makes kombucha the preferred choice for vegans or those on a dairy-free diet. There are several nutritional differences, too.

How are Kombucha and Kefir Made?听

Kombucha is made from green tea, spring water, cane sugar, organic botanicals and a SCOBY. The cultures break down the sugars and tea before they鈥檙e removed from the brew along with any sediment. Then, it鈥檚 just a case of adding some fizz and it鈥檚 ready to enjoy. You can read more about how we make our drinks. Kefir is made from kefir grains, which ironically aren鈥檛 grains at all, they鈥檙e actually a cluster of bacteria. These are added to fresh warm milk which begins the fermentation process. Once fermented, the kefir grains are strained leaving a creamy cultured drink. It can also be made using coconut or plain water to make kefir water, however this is not as common.

Kombucha vs Kefir: What does it Taste like?

Kombucha and kefir have very different flavours. Kefir has a creamy texture similar to yoghurt as well as quite a sour taste. And kombucha is much thinner with a slight fizz and acidic notes; it has. Both of them come in a variety of flavours, mostly fruit flavoured such as or.

    Is Kefir Better than Kombucha?

The best way to decide which you prefer is to try them both and see which suits you and your body most. Overall, both Kefir and Kombucha are healthy options that offer many amazing benefits.

The Benefits of Kombucha vs Kefir

    Kombucha

is best known to promote a healthy gut and digestion, and it鈥檚 low in sugar, around 3g per 100ml compared with typical soft drinks (which can be as high as 15g of sugar per 100ml). It can even support a , so it tastes good and does good, too! It contains live energising cultures to give you a little lift. And it鈥檚 been suggested that the 鈥榩rebiotics and probiotics鈥 in Kombucha can help to fight against the bad bacteria that can make us unwell.

    Kefir

Many people claim that Kefir improves their digestion, which may be down to the probiotics creating a healthy balance in the gut. What鈥檚 more, the fermentation process also helps to break down the lactose in milk, making it even more gentle on the gut. Adding to that, Kefir has been known to support weight loss, promote bone health and reduce inflammation. So, there are definitely benefits to drinking both Kombucha and Kefir.

Things to Consider when Drinking Kombucha and Kefir

    Kombucha

Let鈥檚 take a look at Kombucha 鈥 whilst it鈥檚 great for gut health, it does contain caffeine, sugar and alcohol, albeit in very low volumes. 黑料大事记 Kombucha is low in sugar, alcohol and caffeine but these volumes can be higher in other Kombuchas or in homemade batches, so it鈥檚 best to approach these with caution.

    Kefir

Kefir is also good for gut health, but since most Kefir contains milk (unless it鈥檚 made with dairy milk alternatives, kefir water or aqua kefir), it鈥檚 not suitable for vegans or those who are lactose intolerant. Kefir is also much higher in calories, and all too often contains high amounts of sugar, especially the flavoured kind. As we all know, sugar is not a great asset to any diet and it can be an issue for people with diabetes or high blood sugar. All in all, both Kombucha and Kefir are fantastic drinks that are both healthy in their own ways. And you really don鈥檛 need to pick one over the other, there鈥檚 plenty of room in most people鈥檚 diets to include both. If you鈥檙e new to Kombucha and you fancy trying it out, take a look at.]]>

And because most fermented foods like yoghurt and pickles contain only trace amounts of ethanol, they are permitted in Islam. Most plant products get the thumbs up too, which is great because 黑料大事记 Kombucha is 100% vegan and doesn鈥檛 contain any haram ingredients like pork or gelatin.听

    Does homemade kombucha contain alcohol?听

Home brewers should proceed with caution! We know 黑料大事记 Kombucha is halal because we have strict measures in place, but your homemade kombucha may not be. Homemade kombucha often contains a higher amount of alcohol than shop bought, this is because it鈥檚 made in a far less controlled environment and it鈥檚 far more unpredictable. So much so that homemade kombucha will not be halal because its alcohol content can reach a whopping 3% 鈥 to put that into perspective, some beers contain 3.3.% and are considered haram. So if you鈥檙e unsure of the alcohol content of your homemade kombucha, it鈥檚 best to give it a miss. So homemade kombucha is a no no, but is 黑料大事记 Kombucha halal? Yes, because it鈥檚 not intoxicating. It is however completely delicious, plant-based and wonderfully healthy. So it鈥檚 fine to buy or drink 黑料大事记 Kombucha if you鈥檙e a Muslim. Yay!听 ]]>

Whether you鈥檝e been knocking back the booch for years or are relatively new to kombucha, you may not be too familiar with the origins of kombucha. While its presence in the UK was largely influenced by its popularity in the US and Australia, the history of kombucha spans back much further, so where did it all start? Here we explore the origins of kombucha, how it all started and how the trend continues to grow.

    Origins of Kombucha

The history of kombucha is shrouded in mystery and hotly debated, but the general consensus is that this ancient tonic originated in ancient China over 2000 years ago in the Qin Dynasty (220BC). The Chinese people labelled it the 鈥淓lixir of Life鈥 鈥 with the wonderful healing properties kombucha is known to have, it is not surprising that people used to drink it to stay healthy and protect their immune system! Some more Kombucha buzzwords you might hear are 鈥淭ea of Immortality鈥 & 鈥淲onder Tea鈥. In the 1960s, kombucha was a kitchen staple in many Chinese homes and often referred to as 鈥渨eibao鈥 or 鈥渨eipao鈥 (stomach treasure).听 Others claim that Kombucha originated in Japan and that samurai warriors used to carry Kombucha in their belts and drank it before battle as it gave them a vital source of energy! Other legends point to a Korean doctor of the name 鈥淜omu-ha鈥 or 鈥淒r. Kombu鈥 who used it to treat the Japanese Emperor Inyoko in 414 CE.

    Kombucha in the West

Later on, in the early 20th century, Kombucha became popular in Russia and Europe, where it was used, largely in Russia and Germany for medical purposes and to help soldiers injured in World War I.听 Then World War II hit and rations made it very hard for sugar to come by 鈥 an important ingredient for fermentation, which meant kombucha was almost impossible to find. Kombucha is made by brewing green tea with raw cane sugar before combining with the all-important Kombucha Culture (or SCOBY) and fermenting to break down the sugars into organic acids, prebiotic and probiotic bacteria.听 Then, once the war was over, there was a somewhat revival in the popularity of kombucha. During the swinging sixties, especially in California, households would brew kombucha and then pass the SCOBY along to friends to grow their own, which is how it got the nickname 鈥榞roovy tea鈥 back in the day!

When did Kombucha come to the UK?

Kombucha only really started to pop up in shops and restaurants in the UK in the last decade or so. Initially it was mainly independent shops and cafes that sold kombucha before the big-name supermarkets began to catch on over the last few years. Those in the know on the other hand have been home brewing their own tasty booch for decades!

    The History of 黑料大事记 Kombucha

We鈥檝e been brewing our beautiful booch since 2012 and what a journey it鈥檚 been! We first discovered 鈥榯he elixir of life鈥 when backpacking in Asia and couldn鈥檛 get enough of it, which is why we decided to open our own microbrewery in Hebden Bridge. Fast forward to now and we鈥檙e now one of the leading producers of kombucha in the UK, with countless 鈥楪reat Taste鈥 awards to our name and an

    What is foraging?

In simple terms, foraging is the process of finding and collecting different wild food types from nature; it means getting out there and exploring your natural surroundings for hidden treasures! When done correctly, foraging is an extremely sustainable and economical way to source wild food.听

    The benefits of foraging听

Over the past few years, foraging has exploded in popularity, even in urban areas. You can now sign up to exclusive foraging courses to learn more about how to find and cook unusual wild plants, mushrooms, fruit and nuts.听 So, why is foraging so popular? Let鈥檚 take a look at the key benefits:
    1. Once you know how, you can find delicious wild foods to enjoy all year round
    2. It allows you to reconnect with and develop a new appreciation for the natural landscape around you
    3. Wild foods tend to be higher in natural nutrients and vitamins than their conventionally grown equivalents
    4. The foraged foods you find are always fresh and in season!
    5. You can save money by cutting back on the amount of food you buy
    6. It enables you to find and experiment with new foods and flavours
    7. You can do it almost anywhere! You don鈥檛 need to live in picturesque countryside听
    8. It鈥檚 a great activity to enjoy with all the family and get the kids out of the house!

    Foraging the familiar

Before you鈥檙e fit to forage, there鈥檚 a few important best practices to keep in mind:
    1. Do your research before so you can identify things easily. If you don鈥檛 know what something is, you鈥檙e best to leave it alone!
    2. Only take what you need; don鈥檛 be greedy or wasteful
    3. Avoid foraging from busy roadsides and other polluted areas
    4. Wash everything thoroughly with clean water before eating
    5. Steer clear of private land, unless you have permission from the landowner
    6. Wear gloves and long sleeves if foraging in prickly hedgerows - safety first!
    7. Avoid always going to the same site for the same thing. Keep on learning and exploring new places!

The biggest difference between them is that kefir is usually dairy-based (although there are some vegan options available) while kombucha is usually tea-based. They鈥檙e both fermented which means they鈥檙e full of probiotics 鈥 good stuff that鈥檚 good for gut stuff. But just when you think you finally understand what鈥檚 what when it comes to kefir and kombucha, someone throws in the curveball that is kimchi. Kimchi is more like the weird cousin in the fermented family. It鈥檚 made using lactic acid bacteria and it鈥檚 been used for thousands of years to preserve vegetables. So you won鈥檛 find it in the soft drinks aisle, but it鈥檚 certainly part of the huge fermented foods movement. Other popular fermented food and drinks include:
    • Sauerkraut
    • Sourdough
    • Miso

Amelia Henderson First thing in the morning If it takes you a little while to get going in the morning, or you struggle with feeling sluggish, kombucha can provide you with a great natural lift to kickstart your day. It鈥檚 a great low caffeine alternative to coffee or tea, so you can enjoy a little boost without the dreaded crash! It has also been suggested that consuming kombucha on an empty stomach may also help to balance your gut bacteria to aid digestion throughout the day. N.B. If you have a more sensitive stomach, you may find that your body reacts better once you have eaten. If this applies to you, start with smaller amounts gradually to build up your tolerance. If you are a coffee lover then you can try our unique that is fermented from organic coffee beans instead of green tea.

    After lunch

It鈥檚 common after lunch to feel a little bloated and sleepy in the afternoon. Many of us may reach for another coffee, a sugary drink, or end up raiding the biscuit tin (guilty!) to get back some much-needed energy to keep going, which can do more harm than good. Opting for a kombucha instead, can help to rebalance the gut and provide you with a sweet (yet relatively low sugar) treat to keep your sugar cravings at bay. When it comes to bloating, many participants of our 8 week wellness study, who consumed 黑料大事记 Kombucha on a daily basis reported that they had noticed positive effects on their gut health. 鈥淚 really like it and it makes my gut feel good.鈥 鈥淚 have had a bottle every day; usually before lunch and my gut health is excellent at the moment.鈥 鈥淚t is very possible that the kombucha has helped alleviate my bloating鈥 鈥淚 feel good and it flattens my belly (especially avoids a big belly after a meal).鈥

黑料大事记 Kombucha contains organic acids, antioxidants and live bacteria which can help you rehydrate , without reaching for sugar-laden sports recovery drinks. , 鈥渒ombucha is rich in B-vitamins and folic acid, which is key for helping the body produce and maintain new cells鈥. In the evening

After a long day, we know how tempting it can be to reach for a glass of wine or a cheeky beer, but it鈥檚 not exactly healthy, especially on a regular basis during the week. Kombucha can be a with a slightly acidic taste (much like wine!) and an array of interesting and sophisticated flavours to explore. Almost two thirds (64%) of participants from our post-study survey responded 鈥榶es/sometimes鈥 to considering swapping alcohol for a kombucha. Feedback included: 鈥淚 would buy in pubs as an alternative to alcoholic drinks.鈥 鈥淚t does make a good alcoholic drink substitute I have to say.鈥 You can enjoy kombucha at any time throughout the day. /blogs/blog/our-journey-to-b-corp-why-living-breathing-ethics-are-now-more-important-than-ever 2020-06-16T00:00:00+01:00 2026-03-03T14:20:02+00:00 Our Journey to B Corp: Why living, breathing ethics are now more important than ever Genevieve Boast Our Ethical DNA 黑料大事记 was founded in 2012 in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, a beautiful valley that runs along the banks of the River Calder 鈥 the artery that flows through our local ecosystem. An ecosystem that is, unfortunately, increasingly prone to flash floods. These floods are in part due to the burning of heather on the hills in order to facilitate hunting, as well as the growing levels of pollution that tends to settle in the lower parts of the valley as the number of cars grows day by day. In 2015, we experienced the impacts of these changes first hand when our brewery was flooded, a terrible disaster that almost put us out of business. In February 2020, the river flooded once again and we had to restore our warehouse back from waist deep floodwaters to fully operational BRC Food Safety Standards in 10 days. Then in March, COVID-19 hit and we found ourselves in lockdown, able to continue operating but having to pay even more care and attention to the safety and wellbeing of our staff, our community and our customers. Fortunately, over a year ago in May 2019, we had already decided to begin the journey to certifying and becoming a B Corp. As an ethical company founded in sustainable values, doing the right thing for all our stakeholders (social and environmental) is fundamental to our long-term vision and the values that govern how we do business. The events of 2020 so far, have only served to strengthen our beliefs in this journey and embrace the social and environmental practices that help us truly live our ethics on a day-to-day basis.

    Why B Corp?

The (B Corp for short) measures how a company is performing on a social and environmental level. The process involves the 鈥楤 Impact Assessment鈥 that offers an evaluation of how a company impacts its governance, workers, community, environment and customers. The assessment is extremely robust and ensures that as a business you鈥檙e really walking your talk when it comes to important issues such as climate change, diversity, inclusion and customer education. The journey over the last year towards our first ever B Corp certification has helped us to really listen to where we can make the most impact as a business, and we have already seen exciting transformations as a result. Sustainability, inclusion and ethics have become the foundation on which we base our core business decisions. Our people, our community in Calderdale and our customers are all adding their voices to our on-going conversations into our social and environmental strategy and impact and we intend to do more of this as we move into the rest of 2020 with the climate of uncertainty it has already brought across the world. With this uncertainty and recent events in mind, we鈥檒l be gathering information and listening so we can be sure that any community-based efforts we take on in the future actually reflect the needs of our local community. This is how we believe 黑料大事记 (in line with our B-Corp identity) can be a positive Changemaker. Since the beginning of our B Corp adventure, just 12 months ago,听we鈥檝e made some significant progress:
    • We鈥檝e begun a journey to growing our business the right way. By this, we mean measuring our carbon footprint, reducing our environmental impact and enhancing local pieces of land to regenerate biodiversity.
    • We鈥檙e focused on local recruitment to help build jobs for our community in a chronically under-employed and underprivileged part of the UK.
    • We鈥檝e been listening to the needs of our community and are starting to develop inclusive mental, emotional and physical health education programmes.
    • We鈥檝e begun co-operating with our long-term partners to visualise and over time develop a systematic approach to ethical, clean, organic manufacturing which will, hopefully, one day be shared and replicated in other parts of the world.
    • Most of all, we have put the needs of our biggest stakeholder right at the centre of everything we do 鈥 it鈥檚 the SCOBY in our Kombucha that shows us how to create healthy, living, evolving cultures.
At 黑料大事记, we have a vision of a future ecosystem where humanity and nature are in dynamic balance and prosper together. We want a future where 鈥榟ealth鈥 is fully understood to be a dynamic process, connecting mind, body and spirit. We鈥檙e working towards a future where 鈥榚thics鈥 becomes a non-negotiable part of doing business and gives a return on imagination, integration and investment! And we鈥檙e learning how to really listen and learn from our community and our environment so we can continue to explore how to do business in the right way for all our stakeholders. Finally, if we think about Kombucha, it can only flourish when all the ingredients and the environment that it develops in are just right. Through the lens of permaculture, we can draw parallels with our local communities and society. Only when we have a balanced local ecosystem can we expect our communities to flourish. In our view, this balance comes from clean air and water, healthy food and drink at affordable prices, clean rivers, fields and forests and a social communal framework that鈥檚 free from prejudice, hatred, assumption and fear. Getting there will take patience, effort, and most importantly an ability to listen, learn and change 鈥 together. By making these changes in our local communities we believe that this in turn will create changes on a larger scale that the world so desperately needs.]]>

Don鈥檛 expect a sugary sweet drink or something overly spiced. Kombucha has a very distinctive taste; the taste is a perfect balance between acidic, fragrant and fruity, depending on the flavour you choose. It鈥檚 very different from your standard soft drink and much more versatile pure or as a mixer, which is what makes it such an exciting, tongue-tantalising experience. It also has a distinctive smell鈥 The fermented element of the drink is what gives kombucha its fizz, beneficial acids and slightly vinegary smell, which while noticeable, is not unpleasant (we believe!). Those vinegar notes are 听probably the first thing you will notice, but don鈥檛 let it put you off, the taste is very different from the smell which is why it engages all your senses (and generally tastes better than it smells)! What about the 鈥榖its鈥? You may also notice a few odd-looking bits floating in your kombucha. Don鈥檛 fear - this is the magical SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) that brings all the good for you bacteria! Not only are the SCOBY 鈥榖its鈥 completely normal and safe to consume but as many kids have told us, they give you gut health super powers! Our kombucha is 100% raw and unpasteurised, which means that often听 a new SCOBY will form in the drink after it鈥檚 been bottled. Worry not, it鈥檚 just the live bacteria doing it鈥檚 thing How do others describe the taste? Kombucha has a very complex flavour profile and tastes slightly different to everyone. We asked our followers and fellow booch lovers how they would describe the taste in 3 words, which generated some amazing responses, from 鈥榝izzy, zingy and tangy鈥 and 鈥榮parkly, punchy and refreshing鈥 to 鈥榗risp, slick and sophisticated鈥, and our personal favourite: 鈥榮parkly unicorn champagne鈥. The 鈥榸ingy鈥 or 鈥榯angy鈥 part comes from the natural fermentation process, where the sugars are broken down with the SCOBY to create the natural fizz in your drink. This, blended with the natural flavour of green tea are what make the 鈥榖ase鈥 flavour of our kombucha. We then blend with other ingredients to create the delicious flavour combinations, including ginger, pink grapefruit, turmeric and raspberry. Our kombucha tastes pretty good, and we鈥檙e not the only ones who think so鈥 We鈥檙e very proud to have been awarded several 鈥楪reat Taste鈥 awards for our kombucha, and our master brewers are very proud!

When did you first start My Green Pod and what inspired you? I first started My Green Pod after appearing on a TV show called Dumped back in 2007. We had to live on a landfill for 3 weeks with nothing. We had to build everything you need to build a community out of rubbish. One person鈥檚 waste is another person鈥檚 gold! It really highlighted to me the dark side of consumerism and how much damage we were doing to the planet. It made me want to inspire people to live differently, which is why I started My Green Pod with my wife Katie. The key aim of My Green Pod is to make it easy for people to connect to a sustainable and ethical lifestyle. We find the hero products and services that people need, ones that don鈥檛 damage themselves or the planet. How do you think people鈥檚 attitudes are changing towards sustainability? How people buy their energy and what they put in their bodies and use in their homes is really changing. People are also really willing to adapt their diet and think more about what they eat, whether that鈥檚 reducing their meat consumption or choosing organic produce. I think brands like Tincture and Weleda are real game-changers for natural home and beauty products. What do you think the biggest challenges are for sustainable brands? I think it鈥檚 competing against super powerful multinational companies that dominate the narrative and shelf space. Smaller sustainable brands have much less capital which of course makes it much harder for them to cut through. People definitely do care more now though, which is brilliant. I think consumers are much more conscious about what they want from brands they buy from, and obviously if you spend a little bit more on quality, the product naturally lasts longer. My Green Pod have recently launched a clean starter pack campaign which is a crowdfunding project that allows people to test out natural household, hair and skincare products at a lower competitive rate. Then if they like them, they can subscribe to have them delivered to their door when they need them. The idea is to democratise the natural product sector by using collective buying power to reduce their cost and make it accessible to all. What鈥檚 next for My Green Pod? It鈥檚 a very exciting time for My Green Pod. We are launching a marketplace in the next few weeks which will be a sustainable and ethical alternative to Amazon. People will be able to buy all of their sustainable beauty and household essentials here, and for every purchase we鈥檒l be planting a tree with a charity partner all across the world. Which by the way, if Amazon did, we wouldn鈥檛 be in the situation we鈥檙e in now! Other than that, I am releasing a new single and all sales will go towards planting trees across the globe. Finally, we have to ask you about 黑料大事记 Kombucha! How often do you drink our kombucha and do you have a favourite flavour? I drink 黑料大事记 Kombucha everyday because it鈥檚 part of my personal healthy ecosystem. I believe that if we can create a healthy ecosystem in ourselves, we can do the same for our planet. It has to start with ourselves though. My favourite 黑料大事记 flavour is Peach & Turmeric but I love Wild Berry, too!]]>
