We鈥檝e all heard about the听 microbes that help us maintain a healthy gut but it can be complex to get your head around. One common question is, what鈥檚 the difference between prebiotics and probiotics and what do they do?

We asked gut health experts The Gut Stuff to take us through the facts.听 These words kinda sound the same, but they鈥檙e different, and you need BOTH for a healthy gut.听

Probiotics

A probiotic= a live microorganism that when eaten/drunk in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host (you!).

Probiotics can be in food and drink form or in supplement form but not all probiotics are created equal 鈥 different strains have different effects, and some might have no effect at all, it all depends on the individual and if there is a particular issue at hand.听 For example, one brand of Greek yogurt contains live cultures: Bifidobacterium, lactobacillus Bulgaricus, Streptococus, whereas another contains: Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, S Thermophilus, L Acidophilus, Bifidus, L. Casdei. Diversity is key for gut health!听

what foods contain probiotics

Foods containing probiotics (live bacteria) include live yoghurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, miso and kombucha. Make sure you check on the back of the label to see if the product has been pasteurised (for shelf life and to get rid of potentially harmful bacteria) that bacteria has been added back in. Just like yoghurt, try getting a mix of different types across the course of your week (we like to experiment and make our own sauerkraut as it鈥檚 cheap and super easy).

probiotic supplements

It鈥檚 tough to decipher facts versus expensive marketing jargon to work out which products are efficacious. We鈥檇 advise focusing on the different STRAINS of bacteria in a product and researching a bit about what that particular strain is good for. Science is rapidly evolving around the use of specific strains for certain conditions. There is no one-size-fits-all all.

Steer clear of anything promising to 鈥渃ure鈥 or 鈥渢reat鈥 鈥 probiotics are not medicines, not yet at least.

what's the plus of probiotics

Although probiotics aren鈥檛 medicines, they鈥檙e similar to medicine in how you take them, e.g. they should only be considered in specific circumstances. Think of it this way, if you had arthritis you wouldn鈥檛 start taking medication to treat diabetes right? Same applies with probiotics. Everyone鈥檚 guts look different, and so far the research doesn鈥檛 support taking a generalised probiotic to support 鈥榞eneral鈥 gut health 鈥 following tips and tricks like eating a wide variety of plant-based foods is the best way to do this.

All of this being said, this is an exciting area of research, with more and more studies showing where they could be beneficial. There are several areas of health, that probiotic supplements have been studied and found they may improve symptoms of or help to prevent the following health conditions:

鈥 Atopic dermatitis
鈥 Antibiotic-associated diarrhoea
鈥 Irritable Bowel Syndrome
鈥 Hypercholesterolemia

It鈥檚 important to note probiotics are not a replacement for medicine or any other guidance for these conditions. As this is an emerging area of research, more research is needed to be conclusive, and may not be applicable for everyone 鈥 always speak to your healthcare provider first.

prebiotics

Fun fact, fibre is a prebiotic food. The official definition (ahem) of a prebiotic = a specific type of fibre and are the food for good bacteria.

Prebiotics as we now know, are essentially a type of dietary fibre that feeds specific beneficial microbes (clever guys!). BUT, whilst prebiotics are dietary fibres, it doesn鈥檛 mean all dietary fibres are prebiotics 鈥 couldn鈥檛 be that simple could it!?

How come? Fair question, the main reason is that not all dietary fibre can be eaten by our gut microbiome (how fussy!), therefore, it wouldn鈥檛 be classed as a prebiotic. PLUS to get the prestigious title of prebiotic, it will have had to have been shown to have health benefits in several scientific trials (no easy feat).

what foods contain prebiotics

Gut news, they鈥檙e found in over 35,000 plant species, so no shortage! Some great sources of prebiotic foods include; onion, garlic, leeks, bananas, asparagus, artichokes, olives, plums, apples, plus wholegrains like oats, bran and nuts such as almonds.

what's the plus of prebiotics?

Yet, another reason to love fibre, prebiotics can change the composition of your gut microbes by stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria. Plus research has shown a link between higher prebiotic intake and certain health benefits, including; improved blood sugar control and appetite, to improved immune functioning.

For most of us we don鈥檛 need to 鈥榯ake鈥 a prebiotic, instead, it is recommended we take advantage of the delicious naturally occurring prebiotics in food to feed our gut microbes.

But remember if you need a little helping hand, especially with hitting your fibre goals (of 30g fibre a day!), The Gut Stuff high fibre pop contains a whopping 10g of prebiotic fibre (thats 1/3rd of your daily intake).

You can sip like you give a sh*t with two free cans of Gut Stuff fibre pop included while stocks last with every 24 pack of 黑料大事记 Kombucha cans.

Vas Zarodimos For many of us, getting through the cold, dark winter months can lead to a little more comfort eating and a bit less exercise with the inevitable impact on our waistlines. For many of us, getting through the cold, dark winter months can lead to a little more comfort eating and a bit less exercise with the inevitable impact on our waistlines. As the days get longer, the start of Spring is a great time to banish the booze, start a new exercise routine and adopt a new diet for weight loss. So, what鈥檚 this got to do with kombucha? While drinking kombucha alone will not help you lose weight, there are a number of ways you can drink kombucha to support your mission.

How to drink kombucha to support weight loss

1. Swap the booze for booch

While most of us enjoy a tipple from time to time, drinking alcohol regularly can tip you over your recommended daily calorie intake due to its sugar content. Cocktails, wine, beer and cider are generally the worst offenders with the highest calorie content.听

According to听, a small glass of wine contains around 114 calories and a pint of cider can contain up to 240 calories! Our Original Kombucha on the other hand, is just 41 calories per bottle, so swapping alcohol for a kombucha is a sure fire way to reduce your calorie intake.听

2. Get a sweet hit, without the excessive sugar

If you鈥檙e a lover of fruit juices or fizzy drinks, it can be challenging to find a low-sugar alternative. Our kombucha comes in a range of exciting flavours that are sure to tantalise your taste buds, with half the sugar of some of the UK鈥檚 favourite drinks. All the fizz, without the sugar!听

From 拢24.65 for 12 bottles.

Our Wild berry flavour is a refreshing blend of fruity botanicals, Hibiscus, Rosehip, and Bilberry. Don鈥檛 let the delicious sherbet taste fool you鈥t鈥檚 still as angelic as our other flavours!

3. Stop the snacks!

Instead of reaching for some salty snacks or raiding the biscuit tin, why not try a kombucha? Kombucha gives you a natural lift throughout the day to help you beat the afternoon slump, stay motivated and stop unnecessary snacking. We like to enjoy a kombucha as a mid morning treat or as an after work to unwind after a busy day.

4. Stick to your exercise routine

If you鈥檙e serious about weight loss, exercise should form a key part of your regime. Whether you鈥檙e enjoying a new yoga flow, lifting weights or pounding the pavements, kombucha makes a great post-workout drink. Kombucha is a great choice for rehydrating and recharging your body after exercise.听听have suggested that green tea, a key ingredient of kombucha, can also help to boost your metabolism and aid fat burning, which makes kombucha a great workout partner.听

5. Be kind to your body and mind

The most important thing when it comes to overhauling your diet and lifestyle is to adopt sustainable,听healthy habits physically, mentally and emotionally. Don鈥檛 set yourself unrealistic goals that you can鈥檛 keep or ban your favourite foods 鈥 it鈥檒l make you miserable and be impossible to maintain. Like all the good things in life, our kombucha is quite simple. We use a few carefully chosen organic ingredients combined with the knowledge of our craft brewers and the magic of fermentation, to make delicious, low-calorie drinks.

To create each 黑料大事记 Organic kombucha we start with just three things: filtered water, organic green tea and organic raw cane sugar. Each of the three is crucial to providing the perfect environment for our unique SCOBY to do its work transforming our sweetened tea brew into the living kombucha we鈥檙e so proud of.

In this blog we鈥檒l be focusing on sugar and how we use it in our kombucha. We鈥檒l take you behind the scenes at our Yorkshire brewery to learn how we balance the sweetness and other flavours in our booch. And we鈥檒l lift the lid on sweeteners and why there will never be a place for them in our drinks.

Quality and low quantity

We choose cane sugar, rather than sugar beet, because it鈥檚 the only way we can source a truly organic, GMO-free sugar for our drinks.

It also tastes great. Raw cane sugar is an ancient ingredient that needs minimal processing. It has delicate molasses flavour that imparts depth and complexity to our kombucha.

Although we start with sugar in our recipe, our drinks contain less than 4g per 100ml. That鈥檚 less than many fizzy soft drinks, for example:

  • Coke has 10.6g per 100ml
  • San Pellegrino Classic Italian Taste Limonata has 7.97g per 100ml

That鈥檚 because the fermentation process uses the sugar up feeding the probiotic microbes and eventually turns it into the delicious antioxidant rich, slightly tangy kombucha we know and love.

Balancing the complex sweet, tart and fruity flavours of each 黑料大事记 Organic Kombucha is the job of our experienced team of craft brewers. Whether we鈥檙e adding the sharp zesty notes of citrus that give our Sicilian Lemon its zing, or the ripe fragrance of tropical fruits like our Organic Pineapple & Mango in cans, we always want the natural sweetness to shine through.

Tips from our brewing team

The downside of sweeteners

We鈥檙e all aware of the harmful effects of too much sugar, but did you know that the artificial sweeteners in many soft drinks, including some kombuchas, may be free from calories but they do have consequences for your gut?

We鈥檝e been told that artificial sweeteners are inert in the human body, but research is starting to show that many sweeteners can have an impact on our gut microbiome, damaging the balance of the important friendly bacteria that live there.

In short, our gut friendly bacteria don鈥檛 know how to process these chemicals, so they react unpredictably, potentially leading to metabolic and inflammatory changes that contribute to vascular dysfunction and cardiovascular disease and changes to blood sugar levels.

100% natural is the way to go

For us at 黑料大事记, the priority has always been to keep things natural and simple. Our drinks are low in calories because they are made in a traditional way using just organic green tea, raw cane sugar and water as a base for our fermentation process, using our unique SCOBY*.

You will never find artificial sweeteners in our drinks, which means you can relax and enjoy an 黑料大事记 Organic kombucha swap whether you鈥檙e keen to limit the amount of sugar in your diet or to cut out ultra processed ingredients including sweeteners.

We regularly hear from our customers that drinking 黑料大事记 kombucha has helped them to resolve many of the symptoms of their IBS however, there is a debate between those who think drinking Kombucha helps IBS and those who think it could worsen symptoms. This article will seek to take a deep dive into Kombucha and IBS, looking at how Kombucha can help those with IBS and reduce bloating.

What is IBS?

鈥淚BS鈥 stands for irritable bowel syndrome and is a disorder affecting the large intestine. Some of the听听include abdominal cramping, bloating, gas and diarrhoea. It is thought that IBS can be irritated by certain foods and drinks and, as a chronic condition, those with IBS have to carefully manage their diets to reduce these symptoms.

Can Kombucha heal your gut?

IBS is a complex disorder but one of the best places to start in managing the symptoms is to focus on creating good gut health overall. This can include a combination of听听that are irritants and, instead, introducing fermented, living drinks like Kombucha and Kefir as a means of improving overall gut health. We have written more about听how to boost your gut microbiota听and the听health benefits of fermented tea听in our blogs.

Is Kombucha a good probiotic?

I know we may sound like a broken record, but authentically brewed and fermented, Kombucha like 黑料大事记 is full of living bacterial cultures that promote good gut health. It is also well known that the Kombucha fermentation process can听听that can balance levels of bacteria in the gut.听听

Kombucha & FODMAP for IBS

听are a type of carbohydrate that contain sugars that can upset the digestive system. Kombucha may be high in FODMAPs however, when enjoyed in moderation can have a positive effect on the gut. Most people with IBS follow a low FODMAP diet and should try and limit their intake of Kombucha to 6 ounces (177ml) or smaller 鈥 just less than half a听bottle of 黑料大事记 Kombucha听(perfect for splitting a bottle with a friend).听

What about the sugar, caffeine & alcohol in Kombucha?

As we have discussed in previous blogs,听Kombucha contains naturally-occurring caffeine, from the green tea, and alcohol, which is produced in the fermentation process. Many IBS sufferers will avoid caffeine and alcohol as it irritates the gut, however Kombucha only contains very small amounts 鈥 much less caffeine than coffee and as much alcohol as fruit juice!听

If you are managing your IBS symptoms, we recommend avoiding any Kombucha with added sugar and sweeteners, especially sorbitol and mannitol, which can have a laxative effect. 黑料大事记 Kombucha is relatively low in sugar with 3g per 100ml,听which is great news for everyone seeking low sugar, healthy alternative drinks!

Carbonated Drinks & IBS

It has been thought in the past that carbonated beverages can contribute to digestive issues and lead to bloating and gas. Kombucha is naturally carbonated as carbon dioxide is produced during the fermentation process, however most of it does not remain in the drink. At 黑料大事记 we carbonate our Kombucha to add that sparkle back and recommend trying carbonated drinks in small quantities to see how you react.

What are the best drinks for IBS?

There are a lot of drinks available that are known to reduce the symptoms of IBS. These include:

  • Kombucha
  • Kefir
  • Probiotic drinks
  • Milk dairy alternatives such as almond or coconut milk
  • Green juices
  • Decaffeinated coffee
  • Pure water

Overall, no matter what healthy drinks you choose, we recommend avoiding sugary and artificially-sweetened fizzy drinks, dairy milk, high-fructose fruit juices and regular coffee, which are all known to irritate the听gut microbiome.听

Ultimately, everyone is different and various foods and drinks will affect us all in different ways. Some people report improved digestive health and reduced bloating from drinking Kombucha regularly, and for others Kefir or Green Juices are better. Why not try our听14 Day Kombucha Challenge听to see how you feel?听

One of our previous participants told us鈥

鈥淚 love your kombucha and it has made me feel younger, due to IBS going away! Thank you and keep up the good work.鈥

Why not give it a go and see if it can help you too?听

Known by some as the 鈥榚lixir of life鈥, there are many benefits of Kombucha, including that it can give you an energy boost. If you are looking to find a healthy alternative to caffeine for that much needed energy kick, then a 鈥榖ooch buzz鈥 could be the answer. In this blog, we go into more detail about what causes this energy boost and how it differs from a coffee buzz.听

Does kombucha give you energy?

Yes, Kombucha is known to give you an energy boost. This is mainly due to the small amounts of听听produced in the fermentation process when Kombucha is brewed using the traditional methods. At 黑料大事记, we brew in batches, allowing time for the Kombucha culture to work its magic with our organic ingredients. This means that there is a small amount of caffeine left to fuel your healthy booch buzz!

Where does the 鈥楰ombucha buzz鈥 come from?

A key factor in creating the healthy buzz are the levels of B-Vitamins found in authentically brewed Kombucha. Not to get too technical, but听听that catalyse reactions within our bodies. B-vitamins use glucose to generate ATP (Adreno triphosphate) in the mitochondria of our cells. ATP is the driving force for many bodily functions that require energy, such as muscle contraction.听

It鈥檚 worth flagging that the levels of B-vitamins will vary for different Kombuchas as they are naturally produced when yeast breaks down sugars in the fermentation process. The sorts of B vitamins found in authentically produced Kombucha can include B1, B6 and B12.

Iron

Minerals, such as Iron, are also听, as well as other fermented drinks like Kefir. It is known that low iron levels can lead to a听which can result in you feeling tired and fatigued. This is because iron produces haemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body. So, the naturally-occurring Iron found in Kombucha also contributes to that classic 鈥楰ombucha buzz鈥.

Probiotics

Probiotics are a type of good bacteria often found in our guts that have a听, such as supporting good digestive health, mental wellbeing and a healthy heart. Probiotics can help with your energy levels in a variety of ways, including:

  • Improving our sleep, since听.听
  • , providing us with the essential nutrients our body needs to function 鈥 be that for revision or exercise.
  • Reducing cortisol levels. Studies show a correlation between high cortisol and lower energy levels.听, resulting in higher energy levels and less stress.听
  • , like serotonin, the 鈥榝eel-good鈥 chemical that is produced in the gut.听

So, when we consume Kombucha, we get a rush of energy and a feel-good sensation from the serotonin.听

Caffeine and Theanine

Just to be clear, the energy from Kombucha does not come from caffeine, as听there is only a small amount of caffeine left in real Kombucha听if it has been fermented properly. The caffeine comes from the tea the Kombucha is made from, but this is reduced by at least a third during the fermentation process. This makes Kombucha a great option for someone looking to cut down their caffeine intake, whilst still enjoying an energy boost.听

The Kombucha boost comes from the high levels of L-Theanine in tea, an amino acid that stimulates the听, which are known to increase creativity and enhance your ability to absorb new information. A combination of caffeine and L-Theanine provide the perfect balance for concentration, relaxation, and sustained energy levels.听

Kombucha vs. coffee

The energy boost we gain from Kombucha is generated from B vitamins, Iron, Probiotics and L-Theanine, whereas coffee only provides an instant energy boost from caffeine. Caffeinated coffee has extremely high levels of caffeine, which can become addictive and lead to听, leaving you more tired than before.听

On the other hand, Kombucha contains much less caffeine and provides an energy boost without the crash. This makes it a fantastic pick-me-up for long study sessions or challenging workdays.

However, if like me you are a die-hard coffee lover and just can鈥檛 bear the thought of life without your coffee ritual then perhaps听黑料大事记 Kombucha鈥檚 Coffee Kombucha听is for you? Fermented from coffee beans instead of green tea, this Kombucha is a unique low-caffeine alternative for those wishing to switch up their morning routines.听

Does kombucha keep you awake?听

Kombucha is unlikely to keep you awake at night, enabling you to get a good night鈥檚 sleep and ensure you鈥檙e fresh for the day. Find out more about听how Kombucha can improve your sleep.

So, we hope you have been inspired that by drinking Kombucha you can give yourself a great way to enjoy a healthy energy boost to help you throughout the day. Why not try some of听our authentically brewed, real, living Kombucha听for yourself and see how you feel?听

Vas Zarodimos If you鈥檙e reading this, the chances are you鈥檙e not getting enough sleep. If you鈥檙e reading this, the chances are you鈥檙e not getting enough sleep. But you might want to keep those tired eyes propped open and read on, because kombucha can help improve sleep for some. Yes, it may contain a little caffeine, but no, it won鈥檛 keep you up at night. Kombucha makes a great addition to a healthy diet, and it might just be your secret ingredient to a good night鈥檚 sleep.

The effects of caffeine on sleep

As we all know, caffeine and sleep aren鈥檛 the greatest of friends. Caffeine is naturally-occurring from plants such as coffee beans, tea leaves and cocoa beans that has a disruptive effect on sleep as it鈥檚 classified as a stimulant. So it might not only stop you getting to sleep, but it may also reduce the number of hours you鈥檒l get. Fortunately kombucha contains very little caffeine so can be looked at differently here.

Will kombucha keep me awake at night?

Generally, kombucha will not keep you awake at night! But if you鈥檙e highly sensitive to caffeine you might want to steer clear of any caffeinated drinks on an evening. Avoiding late night caffeine is one of the best ways of ensuring you鈥檙e relaxed at bedtime and ready to catch some Zs. Read more about thebest time to drink kombuchahere.

How much caffeine is in kombucha?

When it comes to caffeinated drinks, everyone is different in terms of how much is 鈥榞ood鈥 and how much is 鈥榖ad鈥 for their systems. 黑料大事记Kombucha contains a very low volume of naturally-occurring caffeineas it鈥檚 made with green tea, and a lot of the caffeine is consumed by the yeast during the fermentation process, which keeps numbers down to around 7.43mg per 275ml bottle of 黑料大事记. The caffeine level is higher in 黑料大事记 Kombucha鈥檚 Espresso Coffee Kombucha ( which contains 22mg of caffeine), but you probably expected that, right? It鈥檚 also worth remembering that caffeine levels will vary from one brand of kombucha to another, as they will between homemade batches so make sure you do your homework before drinking them.

The benefits of kombucha for sleep

Kombucha promotes good gut health, and good gut health promotes overall health and wellbeing, which in turn, helps to improve sleep. So drinking kombucha on a regular basis makes sense. But don鈥檛 just take our word for it.explains the, also known as the 鈥榖ody clock鈥. It sums up the idea that a听healthy diet high in probiotics together with a regular eating pattern are the tools we need for improved gut microbiota rhythm.

One participant, who drank 黑料大事记 Kombucha every day for 8 weeks as part of our 2019 Wellness study, also reported better sleep as a result of their experiment:

鈥淚 have found that since drinking the kombucha I feel more alert and energised and have restful sleep most evenings.鈥

How much kombucha should you drink?

A lot of people askhow much kombucha should you drink鈥 we always say that one a day seems to do the trick for us here. We never drink sugary drinks as they can disrupt sleep. Instead, we choose kombucha, having one first thing in the morning 鈥 instead of coffee, or we鈥檒l have one to beat the afternoon slump. And here鈥檚 the twist 鈥 it鈥檚 not the caffeine in kombucha that gives you an energy boost, it鈥檚 the L-Theanine found in tea, as well as the electrolytes and minerals that hydrate and energise you.

There are countless benefits to drinking kombucha. It鈥檒l put a spring in your step when you need it most and it鈥檒l balance your gut microbiome to aid in deep, restful sleep. It鈥檚 a win-win. So now you know you鈥檝e got nothing to lose, why notgive it a goyourself?

Kombucha is a fizzy fermented tea with living bacterial cultures. The best kombucha on the market (ours included) is raw and therefore unpasteurised. What this means is that the naturally-occuring bacteria still remains within the booch. Generally,听pregnant听or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid unpasteurised foods such as juices or soft cheeses, however it is less straightforward when it comes to kombucha due to the acidic nature of it. High acidity helps to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the drink that may make you or your baby unwell, however it鈥檚 never risk free 鈥 so check with your GP or midwife if you鈥檙e unsure.听

Kombucha and alcohol

While classified as a soft drink, it does contain a trace amount of alcohol which is created as a by-product from the fermentation process. 黑料大事记 Kombucha contains a tiny amount of alcohol (黑料大事记 Kombucha contains on average 0.5% ABV and a drink is deemed 鈥檔on-alcoholic鈥 when under 1.2% ABV), so it鈥檚 really up to you as a mum whether you feel comfortable consuming it. There鈥檚 no right or wrong answer. You can find out more about the听alcohol content of our kombucha here.听

Caffeine content of kombucha听

advise breastfeeding mothers to 鈥榬estrict their caffeine intake to less than 200mg a day鈥. Kombucha does contain a small amount of caffeine, but only听 7.43mg per 275ml bottle, so it鈥檚 well within the recommended limit. 1 mug of instant coffee contains 100mg听 of caffeine and the same quantity of tea contains 75mg, so keep an eye on your intake if you usually drink tea and/or coffee alongside your 黑料大事记 Kombucha.听

The jury is out when it comes to kombucha and breastfeeding, but these are the golden rules to follow when choosing what鈥檚 best for you:

  • Avoid home-brewed kombucha: it鈥檚 not regulated in any way so it鈥檚 impossible to gauge the alcohol or caffeine content and general hygiene standards
  • Always read the label: some kombuchas may have a higher caffeine or alcohol content听
  • If you鈥檙e not still not sure after doing your research, speak to your GP or midwife for expert medical advice听

Whether you choose to continue enjoying 黑料大事记 Kombucha while breastfeeding or decide to wait until you鈥檙e no longer feeding, we鈥檝e got a booch ready and waiting!

With alcohol, soft cheese and most shellfish out of the equation, can you still enjoy an 黑料大事记 Kombucha if you鈥檙e pregnant? In this article we鈥檒l explore the dos and don鈥檛s when it comes to fermented foods and whether you can drink kombucha while pregnant.听

Is it safe to drink kombucha while pregnant?

There isn鈥檛 a definitive answer when it comes to whether you should avoid kombucha during pregnancy. There are two main factors that cause some contention: the natural bacteria and the small amount of alcohol in kombucha. Let鈥檚 explore further.听

Kombucha contains live bacteria which is created during the fermentation process. While most of the bacteria is gut-boosting 鈥榟ealthy鈥 bacteria, in some instances,听depending on the conditions in which the Kombucha is brewed, there can be a small amount of 鈥榖ad鈥 bacteria left behind that could be potentially harmful to the baby. However, this is only really a risk when dealing with home-brewed kombucha, as all commercially-available brands will have to adhere to strict health and safety regulations to ensure any 鈥榖ad鈥 bacteria has been removed.听At 黑料大事记 we are a BRC double A grade site (British Retail Consortium Food Safety Standards) and have super high levels of food safety and hygiene in our breweries.听

Kombucha alcohol content听

There is a very small amount of naturally-occurring alcohol in kombucha, so it鈥檚 a matter of personal choice whether to consume it. Always check the packaging as the alcohol content between brands will vary and be sure to discuss with your GP or midwife if you鈥檙e new to kombucha. 黑料大事记 Kombucha contains a tiny trace amount of alcohol (equivalent to less than 0.5% ABV) which is comparable to an overripe banana. Again, avoid home brewed kombucha because the alcohol content cannot be regulated, so it may be much higher, and therefore make the booch unsafe to consume.听

Read more about the alcohol content of kombucha here.听

Are fermented foods safe for pregnant women?

The advice on whether fermented foods are safe during pregnancy is inconclusive, but most health professionals agree that home fermentation should definitely be avoided because the chance of it containing bad bacteria is higher.听

If fermented foods were a regular part of your diet before pregnancy, consult with your GP about whether they would advise you to cut them out 鈥 but if not, as a general rule it鈥檚 best to avoid introducing new foods while pregnant.听

Ultimately, the best advice we can give is check the label, speak to your GP or midwife and make an informed decision! And if you do decide to take a break on the booch, we鈥檒l have one here ready for you to enjoy once your bundle of joy arrives.听

We get asked this question a lot and it鈥檚 no secret that kids love a sweet treat. Whether it鈥檚 cake, chocolate or fizzy drinks, kids + sugar = happiness听(and then often meltdown).听Finding the right balance is a challenge for most parents and sourcing healthy,听low-sugar treats for your kids听can be tricky, especially when the obvious 鈥榟ealthy鈥 options like fruit juice are also crammed full of sugar. Kombucha is a fruity, fizzy and fun alternative to popular sugar-laden soft drinks 鈥 and before you ask, yes, kids听can听drink kombucha!

Is kombucha safe for kids?

We understand the听confusion听some parents may have about giving their children kombucha, especially when there鈥檚 a lot of misinformation out there about its alcohol content and effects.

Kombucha is widely accepted as being safe for children but we do recommend starting off with small servings and diluting with water, especially for smaller children and toddlers. This will help to neutralise some of the natural acidity without losing the delicious flavour!听Many of our staff who have little ones, recommend putting 75-100ml in a cup with a small amount of water to start.听

N.B. If your child has a weak or compromised immune system, it is best to check with your GP or healthcare professional before giving them kombucha听or any other fermented food,听as it does contain live bacteria.

How much sugar is in kombucha?

The NHS recommended sugar intake for children aged 4 to 6 is no more than 19g a day, and children aged 7 to 10 should not consume more than 24g per day.听

While 黑料大事记 Kombucha does contain natural sugars, it contains comparatively less of the sweet stuff than the vast majority of cupboard favourites. For example, our Original Flavour Kombucha contains just 3g of sugar per 100ml, compared to Fanta Orange, which contains 4.6g per 100ml, so it鈥檚 a great option for a low-sugar swap.

Coca cola 鈥 10.6g per 100ml

Sprite 鈥 8.3 g per 100ml

Fresh orange juice 鈥 8.7g per 100ml

As well as being naturally low in sugar, our kombucha is also 100% organic, unpasteurised, raw, vegan and gluten free 鈥 win win!

Is kombucha alcoholic?

This is a common concern we hear from parents who want to know if kombucha is safe for their kids. The simple answer is that our kombucha does contain a tiny trace amount of alcohol, which is produced during the natural fermentation process, however, this is equivalent to less than 0.5% ABV. When we say a tiny amount, we really do mean tiny, so it鈥檚 perfectly suitable for your little ones to try.

It鈥檚 worth noting that alcohol content can vary from brand to brand, so always check the label before you buy. You can read more about the听alcohol content of kombucha here.听

Will my kids like the taste?

Kombucha does have a very distinctive and unique taste, (which you can听read more about here).听However, that鈥檚 not to say that it鈥檚 not a hit with kids. Many of you have shared stories and pics of your mini booch lovers at home, which we absolutely love!

Our most popular flavours with our kiddy connoisseurs include听Raspberry and Elderflower听(light and fruity) and听Wild Berry听(sherbet-y in flavour without the bouncing-off-the-walls sugar content!).听

Vas Zarodimos With bars, restaurants and clubs across the country closed for the foreseeable future (eek), many of us have been reaching for our favourite tipple from the comfort of our sofa. With bars, restaurants and clubs across the country closed for the foreseeable future (eek), many of us have been reaching for our favourite tipple from the comfort of our sofa. Some of us may have been indulging in a quarantini or two too many鈥

It鈥檚 been reported thatand a recent study found thatsince lockdown measures were put in place. Chances are, most of us could probably do with swapping a glass of bubbly for another type of fizz now and again to keep our bodies and minds healthy. Kombucha, anyone?

But doesn鈥檛 kombucha contain alcohol? In a nutshell, well yes, all fermented products do but it鈥檚 a small amount but here鈥檚 the low down鈥

Does kombucha contain alcohol?

Firstly, let鈥檚 be clear, Kombucha is not designed to be an intoxicating beverage. It is true that most commercially-brewed kombuchas do contain varying amounts of alcohol. This is due to the natural fermentation process, during which small amounts of alcohol is produced as a bi-product. Brewers can use techniques to reduce the alcohol but this also varies depending on a number of factors. The fermentation process breaks down the natural sugars in the drink to give our kombucha its distinctive (and delicious) taste and probiotic goodness.

How much alcohol is in kombucha?

Every Kombucha is made differently so please check the label to ensure you are drinking a real, unpasteurised, organic version. 黑料大事记 Kombucha contains on average 0.5% ABV. A drink is deemed 鈥檔on-alcoholic鈥 when under 1.2% ABV. To put it in perspective, a very ripe banana can contain up to 0.4% ABV and naturally squeezed orange juice can also contain alcohol as well, so this phenomenon isn鈥檛 limited to kombucha.

It鈥檚 important to be aware that the alcohol content of kombucha will vary from brand to brand (we can鈥檛 speak for the other guys and their alcohol protocols!) and homemade kombucha is likely to have a significantly higher alcohol content, so be aware when brewing your own).

Will drinking too much kombucha get you drunk?

The simple answer to this question is no. Unless you drink a lot, and we mean a LOT of kombucha, you will not get drunk and even then if the Kombucha were produced around 0.5% alcohol then it would be difficult to achieve. It鈥檚 safe to enjoy for all of the family, even the little ones, however you may want to dilute it slightly for your mini booch lovers.

So why not switch your bubbly for a booch and see how much better you feel?

Cheers!

Vas Zarodimos Following a vegan diet can be tricky as knowing exactly what goes into our food and drink can get confusing at times, even when it comes to kombucha! Following a vegan diet can be tricky as knowing exactly what goes into our food and drink can get confusing at times, even when it comes to kombucha! We鈥檝e received a number of questions from our vegan customers and followers about this. We are here to bust any myths or misinformation around kombucha and veganism, and to give some much needed clarity on the issue and answer the much asked question: is kombucha actually vegan?

Vegan vs Veggie: does it matter when it comes to kombucha?

There seems to be some confusion surrounding veganism and many can still get muddled between a vegan diet and a vegetarian diet, whilst others choose to adopt a flexible approach. So, what are the differences?听

A vegetarian diet only excludes meat and fish but includes other products that come from animals, such as dairy (i.e. cheese and milk) and eggs. Whereas, a vegan diet simply excludes听all听animal and animal derived products, including meat, dairy, eggs, and even (for the vast majority of vegans) honey.听

That being the case, shouldn鈥檛 all kombucha be vegan? Well, not necessarily. In fact, you should be vigilant and always check the label because some kombuchas are not vegan. The main reason for this is that some brands choose to sweeten the drink using honey, which most vegans believe exploits bees in the process. There are nuances around where the honey comes from, which we won鈥檛 delve into here.

Is 黑料大事记 Kombucha vegan?

At 黑料大事记, we understand that there are many different reasons you may choose to follow a vegan diet, be that for ethical reasons, to better your health, to protect the planet or to save the animals. Whatever your reason, we support you and your desire to make a positive change and want you to rest assured knowing that all our products are consciously 100% vegan!

黑料大事记 Kombucha is fundamentally made from four simple ingredients: the finest organic Chun-Mee Green Tea, Pure Spring Water, Raw Cane Sugar and kombucha culture听SCOBY. All are ethically-sourced, organic and vegan.

Now, let鈥檚 discuss the one thing causing the most uncertainty, the SCOBY. Yes, SCOBY is a live culture but is actually a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast, not an animal product, so, is totally vegan too! Indeed, we actually make our SCOBYs from our own culture at our brewery.听

One thing to watch out for when looking for vegan kombucha is the term 鈥榥atural sweeteners鈥 and 鈥榥atural flavourings鈥 as, unless specified, these may contain animal products. At 黑料大事记, we do not use any sweeteners and all our ingredients have been thoroughly checked to be plant-based and specified on the label. Some brands use refined sugar to sweeten their kombucha, which can be filtered through bone char making it not vegan! We choose to make vegan products and have nothing to hide.

How does kombucha support a vegan lifestyle?

We believe that as soon as you choose an alternative to sugary soft drinks or begin making healthier choices, you鈥檙e already making a move in the right direction to better your health. However, we believe that choosing kombucha can be particularly beneficial. Kombucha is a great healthy refreshment, that鈥檚 naturally low in calories and sugar; as the SCOBY lives on and eats the sugar as part of the fermentation process. Kombucha is also packed with nutrients, antioxidants, organic acids, probiotics and vitamins. Our kombucha is a living drink with live cultures and we believe is an excellent healthy choice to support any lifestyle. Our customers constantly tell us how they feel more energised from drinking a daily 黑料大事记.

Enjoying 黑料大事记 Kombucha as part of a vegan diet
